Register a microchip that was implanted abroad

IPR registers any ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip. The pet owner guide says that if a pet is already microchipped, you enter the existing number. The country where it was implanted does not change that step.

Steps

  1. 1

    Get the existing number

Use the number on the implant paperwork, or have a vet or shelter scan the chip.

  2. 2

    Look it up for free

Enter the number on the Microchip Search page before you pay. The search is free and does not need an account. It checks IPR, CheckAChip (UK), PetAddress (Australia), and partner registries. It does not send the search to AAHA's website.

  3. 3

    Register that number

Create a free account, choose Register a Pet, enter the same microchip number and the pet's details, and pay the one-time fee: $25 USD, CA$34, or £19 on the pricing page. There is no annual renewal.

What this registration does not replace

The pet owner guide says IPR is a supplementary international registry and does not replace a local registration. Keep the registration in the country that issued it, and add IPR so a lookup on this site can find the pet.
